About the Dutch photographer, Germaine KRULL (1897-1985)

Germaine Louise KRULL was a photographer, war correspondent and hotel manager. Born in the then Prussian province of Posen, she moved with her mother to Schwabing in 1912. In 1915 she entered the teaching and experimental institute for photography, chemistry, collotype & engraving in Munich (most recently: Staatliche Fachakademie für Fotodesign München). She opened her first photo studio in 1917, while the war was still raging. Her famous portrait of Kurt Eisner, for example, was taken during the November Revolution. Her connection to the communist revolutionaries who proclaimed the Bavarian soviet republic in 1919 led to her expulsion from Bavaria in 1920. (...) Her photographic work focused on experimental nude photography and advertising photography. She published in various magazines like Voilà, Bifur and VU.
In her first photo volume, 'Métal' (1928), she dealt with the wonders of steel, the testimonies of the advancing technical revolution. Germaine KRULL maintained close contact with other photographers and artists living in Paris, such as MAN RAY, Sonia and Robert Delaunay, Eli LOTAR and André KERTÉSZ. After the outbreak of World War II, she lived temporarily in Brazil and Africa, where she worked for the organization France Libre. As one of the first female war correspondents, she went to Indochina in 1946. Between 1947 and 1966, she worked as manager of the Hotel Oriental in Bangkok. Afterwards she moved to India. Photographically, Germaine KRULL is part of the direction of the 'New Seeing' initiated by the Bauhaus. Her artistic estate is looked after by the Folkwang Museum in Essen.
