About the French photographer, Raphael GAILLARDE (b.1940)

Photojournalist Raphael GAILLARDE had his first publications as a fashion photographer; he began his career as a press and magazine photographer in 1979 at the Gamma agency, for which he worked for thirty years. He has published in numerous renowned international magazines and is an author. He received the 1990 Leica Oscar Barnack Award for his series 'The Raft of Trees' and has also received four World Press Photo Awards (1984, 1990, 1991 and 2000). In 2000 he received the Visa d'or at the Perpignan Photojournalism Festival.

For his out-of-print volume 'Ladakh', Raphael GAILLARDE documented the magnificent mountains and the everyday life of the residents. Until then, the Tibetan tradition had remained largely untouched in the plateaux between the Himalayas and the Karakorum.
