Subject: History and Aesthetics of Object Photography
"Since the 1920s, there has been an unbroken tradition of photographic representation of natural objects and architecture in black and white, with selected photographic photographs by Karl BLOSSFELDT, Alfred EHRHARDT, Bernd and Hilla BECHER, Hiroshi SUGIMOTO and Claudia FÄHRENKEMPER analyzed in detail the visual and aesthetic characteristics of black and white.
Although the pictured objects in the subject photography unfold their sculptural effect precisely through the specific aesthetics of the black and white, so far there is no serious theoretical argument.
Nina Klöpper meets this desideratum by focusing on the image-specific features and photographic production conditions for the first time.
Numerous picture examples reveal the significance of black and white as an artistic abstracting means of expression. A historical overview of the subject photography, which in addition to new image traditions also the New Vision, the photography at the Bauhaus and influences of the 'Straight Photography' discusses rounds off the volume additionally."
