About US-American Magnum photographer, Elliott ERWITT (1928-29.11.2023)

The Paris-born Magnum photographer Elliott ERWITT has become known primarily for his enigmatic and mischievous black and white subjects. As a self-confessed dog lover, four-legged friends played a special role in his photographic work. He grew up in Paris and Milan and emigrated to the USA with his family in 1939. There he studied at Los Angeles City College and worked in a photo laboratory during the Second World War. In 1948, he moved to New York to study film at the New School for Social Research. That year he met the famous photographers Edward STEICHEN and Robert CAPA. He initially worked for the Standard Oil Company in New York and in Pittsburgh. In 1953 he began working for Magnum. One year later he was already a full member of the agency. He was president of Magnum from 1966-69 and vice president again from 1974-80. Elliott ERWITT died on 29.11.2023 in New York.
