"Stijn is a young man of 23 years. Stijn has been blind since birth, he lives alone in a simply furnished apartment.
When the day ends and other lights turn on, it gets dark in Stijn's apartment. It makes no difference to him , he knows his way around in his familiar surroundings.
Peter DEKENS used the weak residual light for his haunting portrait of this young man, who copes with his everyday life without eyesight and is not despondent.
While Stijn is sure to find a table and chair, fridge and dishes, bathroom and bed, the photographer tentatively gropes through the dark.
This contrast creates tension and intensity, which are ideally supported by the spartan processing as a leporello printed on one side." (free translated, © Hannes WANDERER, 25books)

About the photographer, Peter DEKENS (b. 1967 in Belgium):
Peter DEKENS is a documentary photographer with a keen interest in socially sensitive subjects and issues that do not generate extensive media coverage.
For him, photography is the ideal medium to assign visibility to the ‘socially invisible’. Peter does not regard reality as a dogma but as a starting point.
Staging scenes without losing the authenticity of his ideas is not paradoxical to him. One of his biggest assets is his ability to approach people and communicate with them in their most private and personal moments.
