Background information
"The photo book 'Us and Them' is an ode to partnership and art. The book, first published in 1999, brings together photographs by Helmut NEWTON and his wife, the actress and photographer June Newton, who worked under the pseudonym Alice Springs The glittering world for which Helmut NEWTON was famous, a world in which illness, old age and decay also have their place.
Content
The 'Us and Them' collection is divided into five sections, the direction of which alternates between Newton's and Springs' affectionate private world of 'Us' and the glamorous encounters in their social and professional environment,' Them '. The 'Us' chapters of the book show self-portraits and recordings that Alice / June made of Helmut and Helmut von Alice / June - cheerful moments, sad moments, everyday situations. Alice photographs Helmut with his models, in the shower and in high heels. Helmut catches Alice in the kitchen, dressed up or hanging up the laundry to dry naked.
In the final 'Them' chapter, Helmut NEWTON and Alice Springs focus their camera lenses on the same motif - celebrities like Catherine Deneuve, Charlotte Rampling, David Hockney, Dennis HOPPER, Karl Lagerfeld and Timothy Leary. While Helmut NEWTON stages these motifs in a typical way like statues, Alice Springs finds her own, more straightforward approach. The result is a stimulating and touching juxtaposition of symmetries and differences, but at the same time the chronicle of a life together and a long-term love. 'Us and Them' offers not only an elegant example of independent perspectives, but also a tender and stimulating chronicle of love over time." (publisher's note, © Taschen Verlag, 2016)
