Background informations about photo book 'Alpen'
"Conquering distance. The Alps are inhabited, admired, used. They are home, vacation spot, projection surface. They are sublime, discovered, overloaded. Every slope is measured and every summit conquered. And yet there are always new ways to be found To see. Once. Once again. Again and again. The history of the perception of the Alps is by no means static. It has changed dramatically over time. " (© Peter MATHIS)
"Millions of people are out and about in the Alps year after year, and some of them are seasoned connoisseurs. But even they should be surprised by the photo book by Peter MATHIS.
Content
Because the Austrian photographer shows the tourist magnet from a completely different perspective - his photos are sensitive portraits that show the artist's deep connection with his subject. Instead of photographing well-known scenarios, the nature lover looks for the perfect section, the special perspective and the one right moment that reveals a very unique facet of the mighty mountain range. This can be the moment when the fog releases a rock formation, or snow-covered mountain peaks get a haunting presence in the diffuse light. The aesthetic black and white photographs also repeatedly show humans as part of nature and thus the dimension of the mountain landscapes. They invite the viewer to experience the phenomenon of the Alps from different angles.
The skillful mix of strong contrasts, fine gradations and unusual proportions with which Peter MATHIS stages his almost theatrical motifs ensures a particularly exciting picture pleasure. "(Publisher's text, © Prestel Verlag)
