"For me, gray is actually a color, and I first came up with this position of gray in 1976 in the Berlin-Wedding series. It was a very conscious step to drive the pictures even more extreme into immeasurable gray, so that black and white actually gray is actually a color of differentiation for me, as strange as it sounds. Black and white are two fixed points of view, right and left. And I thought that the world was not clearly defined, but presented in many nuances ."
