Background information
"In his photo book debut 'Einheit, Arbeit, Wachsamkeit. Die DDR in Mosambik' (engl.: Unity, work, vigilance)' young german photographer Wandel is telling the story of the 'Madgermanes' – around 16,000 young Mozambique nationals who lived for over seven years as contract workers in the former German Democratic Republic (GDR). Even today, 20 years after their return to Mozambique, most of them are by no means reintegrated and still live in great poverty. Up to 80% of the wages they earned in the GDR were withheld and sent as pension payments to Mozambique – money they were to receive upon their return. But the government there is stalling, apparently in an effort to sit out the conflict." (© Kehrer Verlag, 2012)
