Background information
Catalog volume that was also published in German on the occasion of the retrospective exhibition in the Albertina in Vienna.
"As a passionate observer and chronicler of New York street life, Helen LEVITT has been photographing the residents of poorer districts such as the Lower Eastside and Harlem since the 1930s. With an eye for surreal and ironic details, she has captured people in dynamic compositions for many decades. Her unsentimental imagery opens up a humorous and theatrical drama beyond moral and social documentary clichés. Helen LEVITT established color as an artistic means of expression as early as 1959 and is thus one of the earliest representatives of 'New Color Photography'.
