Book review
"Yet another book in unmistakable Gerry JOHANSSON style. Fine-tuned images with that low-key humorous grant. The black-and-white images depict a desolate industrial landscape in the footsteps of the financial crisis. Empty premises, residential buildings and roads but almost no people are present. Instead, I focus on the cultural signs that people build up and leave behind. When there are people on the pictures, the attention is directed to this, I want instead to make the place itself interesting, he says.
The book is the third and final part of his series, which started with 'Kvidinge' continued with 'Ulan Bator', the capital of Mongolia. The Swedish photographer was awarded the Region 'Skånes Kulturpris 2011' with the justification: 'With masterful track and gaze for the absurdity, this year's prize winner moves through town and country. From the seemingly abandoned, stories of human presence are emerging, and in both 'Kvidinge' and 'Ulan Bator' the framework for our concept of beauty is widened.'
'It must also be said that each picture is a little under of meticulous composition. Each part of the photographs is a delight for the lover of compositional science. But the question that interests me more is: why did he actually go to Pontiac? And why does the Christmas tree on the Executive Hills Road look so sad? "(© Tommy Arvidsson, in: Dagens bok)
Book Review in Swedish
(© Tommy Arvidsson, in: Dagens bok)
