"A small, inspiring volume about a photo compilation that has been published several times, about whose history, however, obviously not everything has been said before ..." (© Richard G. SPORLEDER)
"This book deals with an amazing love ... It is the late love of the people of Cologne for a photo-convolute, which became the most successful picture collection about the cathedral city.
Like no one else, August SANDER with his photographs from the 1930s shaped Cologne's self-perception - although this is based on Sanders' less innovative and historically partially glamorous staging of the city.
How did the world-famous portraitist succeed in generating such a sustained resonance with often dubious and technically often inadequate cityscapes?
Reinhard Matz describes the emergence of the Kölnmappen, their purchase and publication history, in order to finally acknowledge the work with a few frowns - because even at the time of its creation it did not correspond to the modern city or SANDER's artistic rank and craftsmanship.
