Statement of the photographer, Esther HOVERS.
"My work deals with the themes of control and power. Within these themes, I am fascinated by two different elements. One is that my work is about the way control is exercised in public space. When is architecture an expression? What does urban planning and architecture look like our movements? On the other hand, my work aims to discuss 'control' in a political sense. What is the position of the individual within a given system?" (© Esther HOVERS)
The photo book 'False Positives' by Esther HOVERS 'is about intelligent surveillance systems, which are cameras designed to detect deviant behavior in public spaces, and relates to the question of normative behavior. The project, based on eight different 'anomalies', aims to raise this question. These so-called 'anomalies' are signs in body language and movement that could indicate criminal intent. With algorithms built on these anomalies, cameras are able to detect deviant behavior. The clue to the eight different anomalies comes from surveillance experts Esther HOVERS worked with for this project." (freely translated, © fw: books, 2017)
The now out-of-print volume 'False Positives' was shortlisted for the PARIS PHOTO BOOK AWARD 2017!
