Book review / Background information
"Election campaign as metaphor - What 'press photography' might look like if our newspapers were bolder, our supplements more political, our magazines more innovative, is shown by Bernd ARNOLD (born in 1961, who has already published the volume 'Das Kölner Heil'), who explores the Republic where the political business mutates into the symbolic. His visual language is dark, visionary. Bold the incisions. He loves the art of allusion. Libération has cultivated the same. After all, there is now a book as an appetizer - great." Content
"(In his photographic volume 'Wahl. Kampf- Ritual' (election. fight. ritual) the 113 photographs and ten illustrations by Cologne-based photographer Bernd ARNOLD show, among others, Chancellors Willy Brandt, Helmut Schmidt, Helmut Kohl, Gerhard Schröder, Angela Merkel and challengers Franz Josef Strauss, Hans Jochen Vogel, Johannes Rau, Oskar Lafontaine, Rudolf Scharping, Edmund Stoiber, Frank Walter Steinmeier and Peer Steinbrück from eight Bundestag election campaigns from 1984 - 2013. Photographed over the years, the result is a journey through time in the stagings of the rituals of power." (© Edition Panorama, 2013)
