Background information
"The Berlin Wall is one of the most important testimonies to German history. For twenty-eight years it was a symbol of the brutal division between East and West, which claimed many victims. The internationally renowned photographer Robert HÄUSSER, himself a refugee from the GDR, returned to Berlin to photograph this symbol of the lack of freedom and brutality of the GDR system from the West. For the volume 'The Berlin Wall: Photographs and Quotes', he created this haunting cycle of images to mark the twentieth anniversary of the fall of the Wall.
Content
The characteristic high-contrast chiaroscuro drama of his black-and-white photographs by Robert HÄUSSER in the photo volume 'Die Berliner Mauer: Fotografien und Zitate' (The Berlin Wall: Photographs and Quotes), which is now out of print with the publisher, shows the structure as an expression of the brutality of the GDR regime and its contempt for humanity and conveys the feeling of homelessness and imprisonment. Complementing and reinforcing the effect of the images, the photographs are juxtaposed with well-known quotations relating to the Wall. The picture cycle, which goes beyond mere documentation, makes it possible to experience a piece of German history in this book and sets an example against forgetting."
