"The images of 'Ciudad Sur' have found in Sergio CASTANEIRA’s camera a way out of silence and oblivion. Outside the borders of tourists’ maps, the life of the suburbs of Seville could drift away with little ado.

The photographer himself has never intentionally looked for these scenes. They were no more than the backdrop of his commuting to work. But, little by little, these fragmented scenes won over CASTANEIRA and called him to piece them together.  He started then, on his way to work, to shot, day after day for almost two years.

When we look at the black and white pictures that make up 'Ciudad Sur,' however, we are not facing the portrait of a neglected neighbourhood in times of crisis. What we see is an intimate diary that tells us about sense making and doubt." (publisher's note, © Ediciones Anomalas, 2016)
