Background information
The photo book 'National Day / 国庆节' by the German photographer, Katja STUKE, is a highly political book that not only refers to China alone, but to (political) forgetting in general.
Content
Katja STUKE's artist's book 'National Day', designed by Dutch (photo book) designer Hans GREMMEN, combines in the first part images from the Chinese National Day (two thirds of the book) with shots from the commemoration of the 1989 massacre on the same square, Tiananmen Square. Between images and on the back covers of the Japanese-bound book - edition of 700 copies - are texts on the 1989 event that appeared in the Hong Kong press.
The blurriness of the photographs results from Katja STUKE's technique of first filming and then creating film stills, which are then used for the photo book and her exhibitions. In this way, film documents find their way into the world of photo books.
