Obviously, it is a compilation of an extraordinary array of outstanding photographic images. Equally valuable is the thoughtful written analysis which accompanies and interprets these treasures in a social and artistic context.

Together, the text and reproductions of these precious albums from the Library of Congress's shelves make a vital humanistic statement about how personal collections of photographic images have transformed our societal consciousness.
The depth and breadth of this volume is a terrific accomplishment. The formatting which demonstrates the three dimensional nature of the collection is a special treat.
The book is a real page turner, pulling readers from one surprise to another. I couldn't put it down. Kudos are due to the Library of Congress and to Aperture for publishing this tour de force.
Author Verna Curtis brings articulate prose and artistic insight to what was clearly a labor of love for her. She has helped establish the personal photographic album as a unique art form which stands on its own merits.
