Personal statement by Anders PETERSEN
"For me, everything is about people ... what they do, what they believe, their dreams, hopes, visions and virtues." (freely translated, Anders PETERSEN)
Background information, content
'City Diaries #4-#7' by Anders PETERSEN are the latest and presumably final chapters in his ongoing series, the first chapter of which won the PhotoBook of the Year Award from the Paris Photo-Aperture Foundation in 2012.
Since the 1960s, the Swedish photographer has traveled extensively, photographing life beyond the fringes of polite society for his acclaimed 'City Diaries'. It is his indiscriminate and highly empathetic gaze that is marked by a fundamental connection to the people he photographs. His subjects, a world of prostitutes, transvestites, alcoholics, and nocturnal lovers-intimacy and conflict, joy and melancholy, clarity and ambiguity in equal measure-are a testament to his passion for identifying and engaging with subcultures and "life in the shadows," not just documenting them. Discovering the dark in the beautiful and the beautiful in the dark, in impressionistic images with deep blacks and strong contrasts that imperatively avoid clichés.
