Background information
"Three narrators write three books simultaneously at the turn of the year 1960/61 and thus become chroniclers of the 'dog years' of our century in the pre-war, war and post-war periods: Eddi Amsel, the victim, Harry Liebenau, the witness, and Walter Matern, the perpetrator. With 'Hundejahre' (Dog Years), Günter Grass, winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1999 and author of 'Die Blechtrommel' (The Tin Drum, 1959, prelude to the 'Danziger Trilogie' (Gdansk trilogy)), impressively manifested his world fame as early as 1963. Even fifty years after its publication, this 'dark branching story' has lost nothing of its beguiling linguistic power. What's more, the author's love of storytelling is underscored in a lasting way by the fascinating etchings of artist Günter Grass, who to this day considers this complex conception of the world to be one of his most delightful works.
Content
"The three high-quality cloth volumes of the anniversary edition are also divided into these three books of Günter Grass's 'Dog Years'. The highlight of the edition is naturally the more than one hundred illustrations created by Günter Grass. In them one can discover the artist Günter Grass, who - like the lyricist Günter Grass - all too often lags behind the prose writer Günter Grass. Dark, frightening and somewhat cryptic they are, the dogs that the 86-year-old writer shows here. And they captivate the gaze." (© Literaturkritik.de, called on 11/08/2021)
