Background information
"In 2015, Cologne-based photographer Harald SCHWERTFEGER traveled to Istanbul for the first time. The initial aversion to the big city developed into a deep bond within a very short time.
'Polis' - 'the city', as the Greeks simply called the metropolis - became a photographic collection for Harald SCHWERTFEGER, which went far beyond the purely geographical subdivision into Orient and Occident.
Content
In his photographs, the photographer shows us a kaleidoscope of images and impressions that seem to overwhelm the viewer. It is less the palaces from the Ottoman period or the monumental mosque that fascinate Harald SCHWERTFEGER.
Above all, his photos show the exuberant bustle of Istanbul and the people with their deeply different attitudes to life and life plans. Harald SCHWERTFEGER presents the city with all its scars, vulnerability and roughness. At the same time, he creates an endearing portrait of the metropolis away from the usual clichés."
