Background information
"Elina BROTHERUS (b. 1972 in Helsinki) is one of Finland's most important contemporary photographers. Her series 'Annonciation' forms the core and deals with a still strongly taboo subject: unwanted childlessness. In this way, Elina BROTHERUS returns to the autobiographical documentation for which she became known in the late 1990s. We accompany her through times of alternating hope and disappointment. That another year has passed is evident in the calendar pages that are repeatedly incorporated.
Content
The photographs for 'Annonciation' are introduced by a prologue and concluded with an epilogue that shows that life goes on and even a hopeless story with an unhappy ending is not 'the' end. The carefully composed, painting-like self-portraits give way to an observation of the everyday with its surprising and surreal undertones. Elina BROTHERUS refrains from explanations, judgments, comments and teachings and focuses entirely on visual storytelling. The sophisticatedly designed book takes the viewer on a visual and emotional journey into the soul of man.
