Statement from the photographer, Yasuhiro OGAWA
"When I was walking through my late mother's house, I came across some 8mm reels. It had been dozens of years since I had last seen these films. They were filled with the smell and air of an everyday life that was now far away. I stared at the battered pictures jutting against the wall and thought of remembering my mother in the form of this book." (freely translated, © Yasuhiro OGAWA)
Background information
"Yasuhiro OGAWA sorted through his mother's apartment after her death in April 2016 and found several rolls of 8-mm films. He projected the films onto a wall in her last living space, rewound them, and watched them again, this time with a camera in his hand.
Content
Viewing the photo book 'Cascade' by Yasuhiro OGAWA is certainly an intimate experience. The photos he took of the 8mm projections are interspersed with photos of trees, old objects and his dying mother. We are invited to experience some of Yasuhiro OGAWA's most distant memories, as he must have remembered them while viewing the 8-mm reels. The story may be personal, but no bond between people is as reliable as the one with their mother. A sweet, bittersweet, melancholy book with an afterword in Japanese and English by Yasuhiro OGAWA himself." (freely translated, © Sokyu-sha, 2017)
