Background information
"After the loss of her mother, the artist experiences the interruption of her own timeline at one end, while at the other end she has to fulfill her own role as a mother.
In this sense, motherhood in the universe of Dimitra DEDE is not only associated with warmth or joy joy, but with cold ice surfaces that must withstand the pressure of an overheated world.
the photobook 'Mayflies' exaggerates the creative process of mourning. Through multiple chirographic mutations of the images, the experience of loss is represented in interwoven layers throughout the work.
Faces and bodies that linger in the shadows between consciousness and subconscious to become inert, as Marcel Proust once advised, 'When you are used to this terrible thing, that something will be thrown forever into the past, you will gently feel it being revived and returning to take its place, all the space beside you.' This is not possible at this time. Let yourself be inert, wait until the incomprehensible force that broke you restores you a little, I say, because from now on you will always keep something broken inside you. Tell yourself also, this for it is a kind of joy to know, never to be loved less, never to be comforted, but to constantly remember more and more.'" (freely translated, © Proust/VOID, 2019)
Book Review, Contents
The photo volume 'Mayflies' by Dimira DEDE represents a dive into the belly of a woman, an archaeopoetic journey through the realm of shadows of impressive sensitivity.
'Mayflies' are those short-lived insects associated with aerial plankton. Shapes, faces, bare skin, ghosts and Milky Ways appear in the floating world of the images.
We are in limbo, on the side of the children who died without baptism, or perhaps in these rooms of purgatory where everyone is waiting to be labeled, judged and separated. Everything begins with a female gender, the origin of the world, which is basically any image that breaks with the logic of the advertising order.
In her laboratory, in her creative cave, Dimitra DEDE experiments with chemical substances and searches for the formula for the transmutation of matter into a spiritual path. (...) In the photo book 'Mayflies' is not narrated, but written in suspended breath." (freely translated and adapted, original: © Fabien Ribery)
