New Japanese Photobooks

The photographs in the book 'Hey! Hattori' by Yasushi MORI illustrate the love spun together by the Japanese photographer and his pet cat Hattori-kun, who fled Futaba, a town in Fukushima when the Great East Japan Earthquake devastated the region in 2011.

Record #40 consists of photographs that Daido MORIYAMA took in French capital, Paris, in 2018. Near Saint-Michel, Rue Mouffetard and around 'Moulin Rouge', his thoughts drifted back thirty years to the time when he lived for a short period in Paris.

With its generous image flow, this book, 'A Diary', celebrates important Japanese photographer Daido MORIYAMA as the 2019 Hasselblad Award winner and his highly influential, lifelong radical and authentic approach to photography.

Rinko KAWAUCHI's volume in the 'Des Oiseux' series focuses - like the text by ornithologist Guilhem Lesaffre - on the way of life of swallows, their history, their south-north migration, the season of birth, and their special relationship with humans.

In 'Slow Boat' Koji ONAKA compares sailing on a boat with his way of life & photography. The b/w photos were taken between 1984 and 1999. His fifth monograph in total was published in three editions, with the 2nd edition published as a faithful facsimile.

The photos in 'At Dusk' by Miyuki OKUYAMA give insight into her inner life and her states of mind as she moved from one culture to another. The images are inspired by fragmented childhood memories, long repressed fears, and vaguely remembered nightmares.

At the center of 'Doors' is the documentation of photographer Yusuke YAMATANI's European tour, a self-portrait project that combines photography with drum performance. In addition to the performances, snapshots, landscapes und encounters are recorded.

'Ayu no Kaze', found in Japan's oldest volume of poetry, is a sailor's saying and roughly means 'wind of promise'. This photo book diary of longing and serenity alludes to intimate and at the same time universal changes in life.

In 'Sakura', Yoshinori MIZUTANI attempts to visualize the movement of his observing eyes as well as distill the visual experience of meditating & wandering over the blossom tree. He shows that photography is also capable of capturing the passage of time.
