Background information
"In the decade between 1955 and 1965, Horst H. BAUMANN from Düsseldorf was one of the most innovative and at the same time most successful photographers of his generation. From a standing start, the self-taught photographer found a visual language that radically differed from the trends and fashions of his time. What distinguishes his early black-and-white photography is, on the one hand, an honest interest in social issues and, on the other, a consistent search for his own expression in camera art. Even in the most seemingly banal of subjects, he discovered a worthwhile motif through the deliberate use of partial focus, bold cut-outs or sought-after perspectives.
Playing children, fairgrounds, parades, the Rhenish carnival, but also the world of mining and industry became his first self-chosen subjects. He participated in exhibitions, won prizes, and was omnipresent in the press of those years. In addition, he began to distinguish himself as a color photographer. His photographs from the world of Formula 1 in particular made him internationally known and, in retrospect, made him a pioneer of photographic art in color. Most recently, Horst H. BAUMANN appeared in public mainly as a laser artist. This volume, 'Apropos Visionary. The Photographer Horst H. BAUMANN', is a rediscovery of this exceptional photographic talent and also pays tribute for the first time to his contribution to 'New Color' photography." (© Steidl Verlag, 2023)
