Background information
"The photo book 'In Limbo' by Florian BACHMEIER describes an apparent state of numbness as well as permanent insecurity. The German photographer travels intensively throughout the country, taking photographs in the cities, in the villages and on the front lines. In the seventh year, an internal political conflict has turned into a ruthless proxy war that has cost thousands of lives and spread across the country in all its effects. In the end, people are left with only the choice of either settling into this state or leaving the country, their homeland.Content
The portraits in the photo book 'In Limbo' by Florian BACHMEIER tell of biographies in which the conflict has inscribed itself visibly and invisibly. Next to the heroic monuments and the ruins of the last war, the front line runs through the landscape. His color photographs, taken over the last eight years in Ukraine, succeed in making visible the past as well as present historical processes in Ukraine, and in describing their psychological and social effects on the people as well as the landscapes. The included essay by Kateryna Mishchenko is reproduced in English, German, and Ukrainian." (slightly adapted text, © Buchkunst Berlin, 2021)
