About the American photographer, Diane ARBUS (1923-1971)

Diane ARBUS (born as Diane Nemerov) was an American photographer and photojournalist of Russian Jewish descent. She became known above all for her sensitive and unsparing portraits of eccentrics and marginal figures of society, in which she brought out the memorably different and peculiar. She was the first American photographer whose work was exhibited at the Venice Biennale (1972). An overview of her work, conceived after her death in 1972 as a traveling exhibition 1972-79, made her known to an audience of millions.
