"Alfred TRITSCHLER (1905-1970) was one of the most successful post-war photographers. Known with pictures from a trip of the Zeppelin 'Hindenburg' to South America and the Olympic Games in Berlin in 1936, he made his breakthrough in 1949 with his VW Beetle book 'Small car in great voyage'.
But even for connoisseurs it is surprising that Alfred TRITSCHLER photographed sculptures from the Cologne Museum Schnütgen with his Leica camera shortly after the Second World War.
During the war-related outsourcing of the internationally outstanding medieval collection, he created enormously expressive portraits of selected figures and literally brought them to life.
The recordings are in the catalog photo book 'Alfred Tritschler. Medieval Photography 'published for the first time and categorized by the author, Iris Metje.
The volume accompanied the exhibition 'Sculpture in the View of the Camera', which could be seen in the Cologne Museum Schnütgen from November 2019 to February 2020." (slightly adapted publisher's note, © Greven Verlag, 2019)
