"Photo book '1994' is a 'sensitive chronicle of the African continent.
Almost ten years after the great success of his publication 'The Hyena & Other Men', the South African photographer Pieter HUGO introduces the moving portfolio '1994'.
The title of this monograph, '1994', commemorates an important year in the history of the African states of South Africa and Rwanda.
While in South Africa the long-detained activist Nelson Mandela was elected president in the first free elections, in the same year the devastating genocide between Hutu and Tutsi ethnic groups in central Rwanda took place.
Looking back, HUGO worked through these dramatic events with portraits of children and adolescents from both countries. The special thing about this: they were born only after 1994 and are thus less influenced and burdened by political upheaval than older generations.
The result is an authentic image of African society, with which HUGO once again proves his sense of history and people." (free translated publisher's note, © Prestel, 2017)
